History

Patra

Patras, Greece's third-largest city, has a rich history. Founded by the Mycenaeans around the 3rd millennium BC, it became a trade hub under Roman rule after Emperor Augustus re-founded it in 31 BC. Over time, Patras faced invaders like the Goths, Slavs, and Franks.

In 1821, Patras played a key role in the Greek War of Independence, being one of the first cities to revolt against Ottoman rule. Today, it's known for the Rio-Antirrio Bridge, one of the world’s longest cable-stayed bridges. Completed in 2004, it spans 2,880 meters across the Gulf of Corinth, symbolizing Greek innovation and resilience.

Patras also hosts Greece's biggest carnival and one of Europe's largest. With over 180 years of history, the Patras Carnival features parades, colorful costumes, music, and dancing, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
